Dr. Rolf Enger is a Research Optical Physicist with the Shroud of Turin Research Project Incorporated and Emeritus Professor of Physics, United States Air Force Academy, Colorado.  A graduate of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, Dr. Enger holds an MS in engineering physics from the Air Force Institute of Technology and a PhD in laser physics and holography from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Enger’s interest in the Shroud of Turin extends back to his days at St. Olaf when a friend showed him an article in a popular magazine.  He began to seriously study the Shroud in 1978 when he joined the Air Force Academy faculty in the Department of Physics. At the time, Dr. John Jackson was also teaching in the Physics Department.  He and a friend, Dr. Erik Jumper, were in the process of finalizing plans to conduct an extensive series of tests on the Shroud. As a consequence, they invited Dr. Enger to join the Shroud of Turin Research Project Incorporated.  This team of nearly 50 scientists from across the United States conducted over 100 hours of hands-on research with the Shroud in the fall of 1978. Their research has been documented in the National Geographic magazine and in over 35 refereed scientific publications.

Dr. Enger’s first Shroud “project” was to help digitize cloth correction curves needed to produce a life-size statue of the “Man of the Shroud.”  A fiberglass copy of that statue was given to the Roman Catholic Pope at the Vatican and another is currently on display in the Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel.  Since then, Dr. Enger has helped organize research conferences on the Shroud, participated in numerous Shroud-related experiments, and has spoken on the Shroud to well over 100 audiences all across the United States and in South Africa.  As Dr. Enger has said on numerous occasions, it has been a true privilege and joy to tell the story of the Shroud, describe unsolved Shroud mysteries, and, most importantly, share his thoughts on the importance of the Shroud of Turn with Christians and non-Christians around the world.
