Abiding in Christ

Word of the Day

Matthew 27:20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.

I just finished reading through the book of Matthew recently and was struck by the above verse. Only days before this particular verse took place the crowd had celebrated the arrival of Jesus on Palm Sunday, even in defiance of what the chief priests and elders wanted at that time. Less then a week later, the leaders apparently had easily swayed the crowd into wanting to crucify Jesus. It struck me that most likely I can be just as fickle about Jesus as the crowd was. I might not change from praising and cheering him to wanting to crucify him, but I most definitely can be swayed from praise and cheering to sin. My love for Jesus can be so fickle in the moment. If something doesn't go my way or if something seems more appealing in the moment I unfortunately can be easily swayed towards sin. Not necessarily huge obvious sins but little sins that other people may never notice. This convicted me that I need to work on abiding in Christ moment by moment, and depending on him to sway my mind in his direction rather than allowing all the things around me, and even my own heart, to sway me towards sin. I must make the things of God "top of mind" at all times and my "first flinch" for everything. Jesus says to us in John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
