Word of the Day

Reading: Genesis 3

'Eyes Wide Open'

"For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. Gen 3:5-7

I don't think either Adam or Eve had a visual impairment. Eve saw the tree and fruit and it became a 'delight to her eyes'. So we know that she could see. We also know that Adam could see. God had fashioned Eve from Adams rib. Then God "brought her to the man". Adam saw her for the first time, in all her beauty and form. Wow! What a sight to behold. Then, "…the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed". (Gen 2:21-25) If it ended there, this might be a 'Happily Ever After' story. But we all know something went wrong in the garden. The sin of disobedience 'opened up the eyes of their understanding'. Because of sin, a brand new dimension of their emotional sight, shame, now became their reality. No longer seeing things in perfection the way they used to be. What a shame!

Lord, purge my heart from any disobedience that can only bring shame and separation from your presence.

Your presence is all that I desire.
