Word of the Day

Reading: Luke 10:25-37

"And Who is My Neighbor?"

"Jesus replied and said, a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead."

It appears like this man was heading toward a dangerous place called Jericho. If one was a citizen of Jerusalem, they wouldn't even go through it, let alone visit. In fact you would go around it, even if it meant more time for your trip. Well evidently the man described didn't get the 'Avoid Jericho' memo and on the way got severely beat up, being left 'half dead'. When the two religious Levites observed the badly beaten man, they crossed road to distance themselves, each one of them at different times of the day, probably too busy with more important issues. Not so with this Samaritan. "He felt compassion", and took action to help the person. It cost him time, money, and he even ran the risk that the robbers might be close and watching to harm him. His focus was not for his own safety or comfort, but to show mercy. Jesus tells the lawyer, "Go and do the same".

O Lord, that I may truly love my neighbor, and always stop,

to take time to help someone that can't help themselves.

Let compassion and mercy be my focus.
